On Friday 11 April 2025 at The Lane Bookshop, Rashida Murphy and Karleah Olson were announced as the winners of the Double-Take Novelette Award for their manuscripts Old Ghosts and Bloodwood, respectively.
We were absolutely thrilled to recognise their talents and their fearless narratives.
Night Parrot Press created the Double-Take Novelette Award to celebrate new stories in an under-recognised form in Australian publishing. In 2024 we successfully raised funds to cover author prize money and pre-production costs. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure state government funding at the end of 2024 that would have covered costs to produce, print and distribute the work of the two novelette winners.
But this news isn’t going to stop us, because we are committed to publishing literature that doesn’t fit into mainstream publishing models.
We have a dynamic publishing concept in mind, and your support can make it happen. Not only will your commitment give two Western Australian writers – Rashida Murphy and Karleah Olson – the opportunity to have their stories published as a book, but it will also let the broader community know that the writing community supports new forms of writing and bold approaches that don’t rely on traditional models and expectations.
